How many rings are there?

The ground sill under The Log House in Dry Creek

This photo will appear beneath the back cover text of our upcoming book, “The Three Trees,” which will be released on May 1.

I’ve always found the two ground sills under our Old House in Dry Creek fascinating.

When John and Sarah Wagnon built their homestead cabin in 1892, they placed these virgin longleaf pine logs under the flooring for stability.

I knock on this sill each time I go by the Old House.

It is still as solid as the day it was cut over 130 years ago.

It’s a reminder that some things in life are stable and immovable.

A family dispute lingers and continues over the number of rings.

What say you?

Also, foresters: what does a ring really signify about a tree?

The Three Trees

Notes from my Journals

Curt Iles

Relationships.

Sooner or later, it always comes down to relationships.

Louisiana author Curt Iles shares from a lifetime of journals using the analogy of three trees on his family homestead.

Iles, a gifted storyteller, writes of the Louisiana Pineywoods culture of passing on unchangeable lessons and values.

Each of the three trees has a unique story to tell about the importance of generational relationships in passing on wisdom and insight.

In the warm, engaging style loved by his readers, storyteller Curt Iles paints a picture in words of the rich culture of growing up in his hometown of Dry Creek. His stories, as always, include colorful characters and memorable events that shaped his life.

The Three Trees contains over forty chapters about the solid lessons for young people as they enter life. The solid longleaf pine sill on the back cover signifies the values that last.

They placed this ground-floor sill at our Old Home homestead as the foundation in 1892. It remains as solid as the day they felled it.

The Three Trees is also a leadership book containing timeless truths about effective leadership and personal growth.

Written for leaders and readers of all ages, The Three Trees is for readers who wish to follow their hearts, keep their inner compass true, and finish strong.

It is a memorable guidebook for building trust and forming lasting relationships.

There’s that word again. Relationships.

Because relationships rule.

The Three Trees is about building and keeping these relationships because, in the end, people are the only things that matter.

“Everything rises and falls on relationships.”

– John Maxwell

Iles is the author of fifteen books celebrating life, all written from his hometown of Dry Creek, Louisiana. He and his wife, DeDe, live in Alexandria, Louisiana, near their three sons and nine grandchildren.
